Why Saddle Hunting?
Saddle Hunting has been around a long time…I had no idea it was out there until about 2 years ago. It’s gained some traction in the bowhunting world in the last few years. Personally I think it is because more and more information is available to us and the run and gun method of hunting is proving to be successful for so many hunters.
Why I am choosing Saddle Hunting?
There are many reasons to choose Saddle hunting. Here a few that made me take the leap.
- I wear my treestand and harness combined.
- My ground setup and elevated treestand setup can be combined.
- Lightweight for the ultimate mobile hunting setup.
- My climber setup was loud and I needed just the right tree to get in.
- It opens up a whole community of DIY minded people!
- It’s growing in the bowhunting world.
Great Resources as we learn to Saddle Hunting
I am a newbie to saddle hunting and will be sharing my experiences along the way. There is no lack of information or support as we dive in. These are the places I have found so far to be very helpful for information around saddle hunting.
- YouTube – Simply Search it up and you will find many How-To Videos G2 Outdoors and DIY Sportsman are a couple of great channels to follow but do not limit yourself to these.
Any Saddle Manufacturer website – I think there will be a few more added to the list as the 2020 ATA show is only in a few days.
For Support / Questions on Saddle Hunting
Saddlehunter.com is probably the best place to look up questions you might have or even ask specific questions you might have. You instantly get connected to a group of hunters with years of experience Saddle hunting. The manufacturer websites are also great places to look at. For me, Saddlehunter.com has been the best resource.
Next Steps Saddle Setup
Once you have decided on a saddle….Practice! I have worn mine on a few hunts this year, not even planning to climb a tree. My goal is to be able to walk into the woods with the flexibility of hunting from the ground or from a tree. After I was comfortable wearing the saddle and familiar with how it worked, then picked a tree to practice my hanging setup from the ground. If you are a run a gun hunter you might already have a climbing method of steps or tree spikes. Again with the ATA coming, I will be waiting to see what best climbing method to choose. I will most likely go with some sort of steps and a platform…more to come!
