Mistakes – Daily Journal

James 1:14 ESV

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

1 John 1:9 ESV

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

James 3:2 ESV

For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

Genesis 3:1-24 ESV

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” …

Mistakes happen all the time and I am guilty of many. This is a result of a choice made, and/or a judgment made that is incorrect. To me, this term is used in two ways and is up to the individual to understand the difference.

1. A choice made (action or judgment) without the intent of wrong or failed outcome. Prior knowledge just was not there and all intentions were actually good!

2. A choice made (action or judgment) with the intent of doing wrong. OR having prior knowledge and knowing the result of my choice might have an ill effect.

Both can be considered as mistakes if we look at the definition of mistake (a wrong action or judgment). I hear often that it is ok to make mistakes and not to be afraid of making mistakes, this is how you learn. I think this is partially OK if the intent is for the good. Like I mentioned – Mistakes happen all the time and I am guilty of many.

For me, I like to look at mistakes as an opportunity to learn. And from the passages above we do this by confessing or admitting I made a mistake (wrong choice). This is not easy for some choices because this opens us up (Vulnerability). At this point, you can learn and I think this is where accountability steps in. I have the opportunity to learn/change/grow.
