Judgment – Daily Journal

Matthew 7:1-29 ESV

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. …

James 2:13 ESV

For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Romans 14:12-13 ESV

So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.

Judgment for social creatures like us is and I know for me is at the root of a lot of actions. I do think it takes time to become aware of the judgment that takes place. Think about when kids start to learn and grow and how they enter school. By the time we are in high school, we are definitely aware of the judgment. We not only judge others but judge our own selves at the same time. Always comparing ourselves against others and deciding how to act or look to fit in (or even not fit in). This is our social nature.

The ability to handle the judgment or deal with the judgment is one thing. Casting judgment with poor intent is another thing. Confidence in oneself and knowing that others are judging all the time (no escaping it) allows me to understand it a bit better. Judgment overall is needed in order to make certain decisions (safety is one example). Judgment with poor intent just doesn’t feel right.
