Fasting – Daily Journal
Matthew 6:16-18 ESV
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Psalm 35:13 ESV
But I, when they were sick— I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest.
To continue with the theme this week … Fasting is an interesting topic. It seems to be coming back in the health and diet world. Intermittent fasting and longer-term fasting are showing to be useful especially when we have so many choices and availability of great tasing food! I also think there are different types of fasting, more in the terms of restriction of lack of something. One thing to note is that it is a choice to fast from something. This is maybe where more of the benefit comes in… I see it often, a lot of one thing may not always be “good” or is there such thing as “too much of a good thing”.
One thing is certain, fasting has been around a long time, so it’s something to take note of. I find it interesting that when you are sick, you do not want to eat much. For me, after a day of being sick and not eating usually brings me back to health….?
