Authority – Daily Journal
Romans 13:1 ESV
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Matthew 28:18 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Acts 5:29 ESV
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Luke 10:19 ESV
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
Authority and power are tough to separate for me sometimes. Often I think authority assumes power or with authority, you have given power. So is authority power? By definition yes – Authority is the power to command and judge.
Power has many layers for me. Just because I have power, does not mean I have authority. Like I have the power to make choices for my own self (guided), but this does not mean I have the authority to make choices for others.
For me, authority is rare as stated above. There are few instants where authority comes in and maybe why it is confusing in some cases. Maybe it is because authority can be assumed in some instances and people command and judge for personal gains.
Example I can think of here to try and clear this up.
Do parents have authority over their children? We as parents have to make decisions to raise our kids the best we can. So, kids need parents to make choices for them until they are ready to make choices on their own. We assume the authority for a while and I believe is often guided by some means.
I have to study this one more!
